Continuing Education Professional Development 2009
The Simcoe County Dental Hygienists’ Society is pleased to present
Abuse
Recognition, Detection and Reporting
Speaker: Dr. Frank Stechey

Saturday November 7, 2009
9am-2pm (registration 8:30am)
Georgian College, Barrie

Alumni Hall

The area of Child, Spousal and Elder Abuse is an unfortunate reality for all of us. The dental professional is in a unique position and possesses a vast amount of knowledge that can be integral in the recognition, detection and reporting of abuse. This seminar will tell you what to look for in suspicious physical abuse cases, the difference between accidental and abusive situations and how to objectively document and make clinical notes in preparation for potential investigative action and criminal/ court proceedings. The dental professional’s legal responsibility in reporting suspected abuse and compliance in the release of records are just some of the other topics that will be discussed during the presentation. Although this course is a “must have” for any health care provider, it should be noted that there will be specific cases discussed and photographic evidence reviewed. The material may be disturbing and graphic so attendee discretion is cautioned and advised. In addition to our keynote speaker, representatives from law enforcement and The Children’s Aid Society will be on hand to provide input and answer your questions. The entire dental team needs to have a cohesive approach when there is a suspected case of abuse and all team members need to be part of the process. We would like to invite all members of the Dental Team along to this seminar (tuition rates apply) with a portion of the tuition proceeds being donated to charities fighting abuse. Attendance is limited and is on a first-come first served basis so please register early to avoid disappointment.
Dr Stechey is a well known and respected expert in the area of abuse. He was the first non-US dentist to become part of the forensic team identifying remains of the victims of 9/11. His over 24 years of forensic dental experience has covered cases dealing with child abuse, spousal and senior abuse, criminal and civil cases, product liability and homicides. He has established a  state-of-the-art medical-dental clinic for the Hamilton CAS and has received training and invitations from the FBI Academy, The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Federal Emergency Management Agency plus several colleges and universities throughout North America.
